Paolo Angeli Mirko Guerrini Duo (Italy)
Paolo Angeli prepared sardinian guitar, voice + Mirko Guerrini saxophones
This unique duo with Paolo Angeli and Mirko Guerrini is inspired by traditional Sardinian folk tunes, yet always innovative. Angeli’s collaborations include Pat Metheny – who designed “The Instrument” – Fred Frith, Hamid Drake, Iva Bittova, Takumi Fukushima etc.
His spontaneous improvisations open up a treasure trove of sonic possibilities, showcasing his unique prepared Sardinian guitar: a hybrid orchestra of an instrument with strings going in all directions, foot-pedal-controlled motorised propellers and hammers to create shimmering drones and bass-lines as he bows, strikes, plucks and strums while producing rhythmic atmospherics by treading on a plastic bag and adjusting tunings on the fly.
The brilliant, eclectic and multi-instrumentalist, composer and orchestra conductor, Mirko Guerrini (collaborations with Billy Cobham, Brian Auger, Mark Feldman, Stefano Bollani, Enrico Rava, Stefano Battaglia, Paul McCandless, Caetano Veloso, Hermeto Pascoal as far as jazz is concerned, with notable singers-songwriters such as Ivano Fossati and Giorgio Gaber and with a number of other outstanding artists in Italy and abroad).
This performance in duo, co-organised with the Italian Institute of Culture in Sydney, would show as is still possible to play traditional music in cross over with different musics from jazz to classical contemporary music.
