Event Details

World premiere of a new work written for the ‘Monash Art Ensemble’ which is a collaboration between the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and The Australian Art Orchestra.

The music is incredible and is based on Ars Nova which is a musical style that flourished in France in the Late Middle Ages. It is rhythmically complex and features the richest, strangest sounding counterpoint.

In addition to Dave Douglas playing C trumpet the band features prominent players along with outstanding emerging talents including: Paul Grabowsky director/piano, Geoff Hughes guitar, Mirko Guerrini bass clarinet and baritone saxophone, Peter Knight laptop electronics/sampler, Lachlan Davidson alto saxophone, Craig Beard vibraphone, Rob Burke saxophone and clarinet, Marty Holoubek bass, Kieran Rafferty drums, Will Martina cello, Jordan Murray trombone, Ben Harrison trumpet, Paul Cornelius saxophone, Niran Dasika trumpet, Elizabeth Sellars violin…

Dave Douglas is one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz, both as a trumpeter and a composer. His work ranges across the length and breadth of jazz, from neo-bop to his long association with John Zorn. His eloquent compositions bring various musical languages into dialogue, resulting in fascinating and compelling sound worlds. This collaboration with the Monash Art Ensemble, the latest in a series of projects with leading figures in contemporary music including Mark Helias, George Lewis and Mary Finsterer, will be a must-see event for lovers of new jazz, and contemporary music generally.
